The Birger Jarls torn (tower) and the south tower of the Wrangelska palatset (palace) are the only remaining features of a 16th century defensive system including a wall between the two towers. The Riddarholmskyrkan (church) dates from the 13th century, and is used to orient one's self in several subsequent archival views of Stockholm. The spire was destroyed in 1835 by fire, initiated by a lightning strike, but was promptly rebuilt.
